City Reviewing Options for Development of Proposed Tennis Courts

Lloydminster, AB/SK – City Council and Administration will engage in further discussion this week as they review options for the proposed development of two new tennis courts.

Through discussions with local user groups and review of user data, the City identified a need for additional tennis courts to supplement the existing four courts at Bud Miller All Seasons Park. During the regular City Council meeting on Monday, May 8, 2017, Council voted to approve the award of the court construction to Bexson Construction for $273,000.

Though a tender has been approved, City Council and Administration have opted to give further consideration to recreational priorities and allow time to examine alternative court locations.

“We’ve heard from residents that local court space is in short supply during the tennis season, particularly during evenings and weekends,” said Mayor Gerald Aalbers. “In coming days, Council and Administration will collect more information and engage in more discussion to identify the most strategic approach in meeting our city’s recreational needs.”

A recent study by Tennis Canada shows tennis as of one of the nation’s fastest-growing sports, with the strongest growth among children under 12 years old.

Residents wishing to share input on the proposed court development are encouraged to email yourvoice@lloydminster.ca.
