Fire Prevention Week October 8-14, 2017 “‘Every Second Counts – Plan Two Ways Out”

Lloydminster AB/SK-During Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 8 – 14, 2017, the Lloydminster Fire Department continues to remind residents that advanced planning is critical to avoiding tragedy during emergency situations.

The theme of the 2017 Fire Prevention Week campaign is ‘Every Second Counts– Plan Two Ways Out.’ According to Fire Prevention Canada, 78 per cent of fire deaths occur at home between 2 - 4 a.m. while occupants are asleep. That is why it is critical to develop an escape plan with multiple exits, because one needs to react quickly since in a fire:

  • The smoke is black and very thick, making it impossible to see.
  • There is no time for indecision; an entire home can be engulfed within five minutes.
  • Most people are killed by smoke inhalation, not the flame of the fire.

“We encourage families to have a fire escape plan that includes best exit routes and a meeting area outside the home,” said Jordan Newton, Fire Chief. “It is important for all family members to know how to react if a fire ever arises.”

Residential Inspections

The Lloydminster Fire Department will be conducting door-to-door residential inspections throughout Fire Prevention Week, checking smoke alarms, furnaces, electrical hazards and other areas for home fire safety. Voluntary inspections will occur between 7-9 p.m. Members of the Lloydminster Fire Department will be carrying proper identification.
