Qualification of Candidates
Mayor/Councillor
A person is qualified to be nominated as a candidate in a municipal election and to hold office as Mayor or Councillor of a municipality if the person:

1. in the case of a municipality:

(a) on the day of the election, is at least 18 years of age; and

(b) at the time he or she submits the nomination paper, is a Canadian citizen and has resided

i. in that municipality, or on land now in that municipality, for at least three (3) consecutive months immediately preceding the date on which the nomination papers are submitted; and
ii. in Saskatchewan/Alberta for at least six (6) consecutive months immediately preceding the date on which the nomination papers are submitted.
iii. is not disqualified pursuant to this or any other Act.

Please note: (as per Sec 26.1 of the ACT)
None of the following persons is qualified to be nominated or elected or to hold office as a member of council:
  • a judge of a court;
  • an auditor or solicitor of the municipality.

No person is disqualified from being nominated, elected or holding office as a member of a council by reason of having an interest in a contract with the municipality.

Board Member – School Division

A person is qualified to be nominated as a candidate for and hold office as a board member for a school division if the person:

1. is an elector of the school division on the day of the election; (see below for qualifications of an elector)

2. at the time he or she submits the nomination paper is a Canadian citizen,
AND has resided:
(a) in the school division, or on land now in that school division, for at least three (3) consecutive months immediately preceding the date on which nomination papers are submitted; and
(b) in Saskatchewan/Alberta for at least six (6) consecutive months immediately preceding the date on which nomination papers are submitted.


Please note: (as per qualifications of an elector)

To qualify to be registered as an elector in any election held in a separate school division, the person must, in addition to all other requirements set out, be of the religious faith of the minority that established that separate school division,
(a) on being registered as an elector in that separate school division, does not qualify to be registered as an elector in respect of any other school division


Qualifications of Electors
NOTE: In Lloydminster, the term "Saskatchewan" means the Province of Saskatchewan OR the Province of Alberta.

Mayor/City Council
You are qualified to be registered to vote for mayor or councillor on election day if:
1. On the day of the election you are a Canadian citizen;
2. On the day of the election you are 18 years of age;
3. On the day of the election, you have resided in Saskatchewan for at least six (6) consecutive months, AND
a. have resided within the City of Lloydminster for at least three (3) consecutive months immediately preceding election day, OR
b. have been the owner of assessable land located within the City of Lloydminster for at least three (3) consecutive months immediately preceding election day.

School Division
You are qualified to be registered to vote for the school division on election day if:
1. On the day of the election you are a Canadian Citizen;
2. On the day of the election you are 18 years of age;
3. On the day of the election, you have resided in Saskatchewan for at least six (6) consecutive months, AND
a. have resided within the boundaries of the school division for at least three (3) consecutive months immediately preceding election day;
b. qualify as an elector of that school division.

Separate School:
In addition to the requirements outlined above, to qualify to vote in an election for the separate school division you must:
a. be a member of the religious faith of the minority that established the separate school division;
b. qualify as an elector of that school division.

A person who is registered as an elector in one school division is NOT QUALIFIED to be registered as an elector in any other school division.
