Frequently Asked Questions

If you’ve made it this far, you may be considering a move to Lloydminster AB/SK! Below are commonly asked questions about what it’s like to live on the border. Please get in touch if yours are not addressed. We’re here to help!

General impact of living on the border

In Lloydminster, businesses in both provinces charge a 5% Goods and Sales Tax (GST) on taxable goods and services. Businesses located within Lloydminster, Saskatchewan are not required to account for Provincial Sales Tax (PST) on goods, fixed assets, or services for their own business use with the exception of those outlined in the Information Notice linked here.

Generally, Lloydminster follows the stricter of the two laws between Alberta and Saskatchewan. Some laws are dependent on which side of the border you are on (for example, legal drinking age).

Vehicle licensing, registration, and insurance is dependent on which province you live in.

You will get your driver's license in whichever province you live in (Alberta or Saskatchewan). While there are many similarities between the two provinces, there are some differences when it comes to exchanging your driver's license. For more information, visit the Alberta Government website if you live in Alberta, or SGI if you live in Saskatchewan

If you live in Alberta, visit Wilson Registries for all your registry needs. Vehicle insurance is offered by a variety of private insurance companies.

If you live in Saskatchewan, registration and insurance is completed through SGI.

Healthcare

Some of the services Lloydminster Hospital provides are a 24/7 emergency department, Dialysis, Cancer Care, Physical Therapies, Diagnostic Imaging, Laboratory, Maternity Ward, Medical Inpatient Services, and Palliative Care.

Lloydminster is home to a variety of specialists. If you require a specialist that is not available in Lloydminster, your healthcare provider will refer you to a larger center, usually Edmonton, AB or Saskatoon, SK. Typically, referrals are made to specialists in the province where your health card is issued.

If you stay in the same province you currently reside in, you don’t have to do anything!

If you move to the other province, you will have to register for a new Health Card in that province. See “What do I need to know if I am coming from outside Alberta or Saskatchewan?” for more information on registering for a Health Card in a new province.

All new Alberta or Saskatchewan residents must register themselves and their dependents for a Health Card to receive health services coverage. There are no premiums or payments to be registered with either provincial health care insurance program or to receive a health care card. Any health care card can be used on both sides of the provincial border.

If you live in Alberta, you will register with Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP). Once you’ve completed the forms, you can bring them to Wilson Registries

If you live in Saskatchewan, visit eHealth Saskatchewan to register.
