Cemetery
Location
The Lloydminster Cemetery is located in the north east quadrant of the City. To reach the cemetery, follow 49th Avenue to 54th Street - turn east and follow the road to the cemetery entrance. The kiosk, located at the entrance, contains a map of the cemetery as well as an alphabetical listing of interments.
Facts
Some interesting facts about the Lloydminster Cemetery:
- The oldest gravesite is that of Frank Hurt (1903). He was a surveyor, and is buried in what is now regarded as the new part of the Cemetery in Section N, Row 1, under the maple tree.
- The oldest person who has been buried in this cemetery is Ellen Sarah Elizabeth Kent at 106 years. (Section F, Grave 122). John T. Vine was buried at 104 years (1886-1990). It is believed he was a war veteran serving in three wars. His grave is Section A1, Grave 72.
- As of June 2004, we have 7,200 graves sold and 1,700 available for sale.
- There are 358 known veterans buried here.
- Two original Barr Colonists, Alice Josephine and Harry Salt, (1883-1942) are buried in Section A, Graves 686 and 687.
- It is suspected that the southeast corner of the cemetery is the site of many paupers, no proper records were kept.
- East of the hedge is the original cemetery location. The city expanded to the west in 1985. The concrete ribbons were installed in 1986 in an effort to reduce maintenance costs.
- Wildlife, such as deer, rabbits, owls, ducks, foxes, coyotes, gophers, mice, moles and numerous birds are often spotted here.
- One of the city's tree nurseries is at the west end of the cemetery. The original spruce trees in the old cemetery are at least 80 years old.
- Approximately 80 burials occur each year.
- In 2004, the City added the Columbaria Garden to the cemetery. The Columbaria Garden is located in section A1. This granite structure offers 90 niches in two sizes. A 12 foot by 12 foot back granite door cover is included with the purchase of a niche on which you can memorialize the loved one. All niches are triple sealed and bolted with tamper proof hardware assuring the utmost in security.
- Donations are accepted for capital improvements to the cemetery. All donations go directly towards construction of major upgrading projects. Amounts greater than one hundred dollars will have their name engraved on a recognition plaque located at the Kiosk.
