Curbside Collection

• Styrofoam – This material is not recyclable and must be placed in the grey waste cart
• Shredded Paper – This material is too small to be sorted at the recycling facilities and must be placed in the green organics cart. If choosing to bag the paper, ensure to use certified organic bags.
• Pizza Boxes – Even if these appear to be clean, there are food and grease particles on the cardboard soiling it. All pizza boxes go in the green organics cart.
• Tissue and paper towel – These items easily biodegrade and are usually soiled. Place them in the green organics cart.
• Soft plastics – Any plastic that is soft such as cellophane, yogurt containers, and hinged/unhinged plastic containers (clamshells) must be placed the grey waste cart.
• Black plastics such as disposable utensils and rigid takeout containers are not recyclable due to the black pigment and must be placed the grey waste cart. 

The placement of your cart(s) is important. If your grey and/or green cart(s) were not collected, make sure you are following the appropriate steps:

• Have your carts and blue bags out by 7 a.m. on your collection day.
• Place your carts so that the wheels are to the curb (facing forward)
  • Place blue bags on the curbside, not boulevards or front lawns
• Do not park in front of carts or blue bags until they are collected
• Keep your carts and blue bags spaced one metre (an arm's length) apart. See example of cart spacing.
• Ensure that the lid is fully closed. Overflowing carts not be emptied
• Extra bags outside the cart will not be picked up. Loose material will not be collected
• Do not overload carts. Heavy carts cannot be picked up by the truck’s mechanical arm.

Excess organics set beside the cart or overflowing from the cart will not be picked up. If possible, hold onto excess organics until the next scheduled pickup day, or use a backyard composter.

RFID systems are common in the solid-waste industry, as more communities are recognizing the significant benefits. By implementing the system, the City of Lloydminster will, over time, identify opportunities to improve existing service and divert more waste from the landfill. Using RFIDs, the City of Lloydminster can also verify collection services - enhancing customer service.

Polystyrene foam, commonly called Styrofoam, is a cheap insulator for food and homes and is often used as a packing material. The City's curbside collection services cannot clean, store or transport Styrofoam for recycling.

Residents must place Styrofoam in the waste (grey) cart. Recycling (blue bags) and organics (green) carts containing Styrofoam will be in violation and will not be picked up.

Why do I not get a discount for organics collection from November to April?

The waste and recycling collection fee on the utility bill already accounts for the change in collection frequency of the organics in the winter. The City of Lloydminster charges a fixed fee throughout the year for administrative efficiency.

From January 8-12, 2024, natural, undecorated Christmas trees will be accepted as part of curbside collection. Simply place your tree on the curbside by 7 a.m. on your collection day and the City will remove it for you.

From December 27, 2023, to January 20, 2024, natural, undecorated Christmas trees will accepted at the landfill.
