Curbside collection is the City of Lloydminster's program for collecting recycling, organics and garbage. Organic curbside collection (green bin) returns to twice monthly pickup on November 2.

Download the 2020-2021 collection calendar

Note: If your collection day falls on Christmas Day or New Year's Day, place your items out one day early.

Residents receive one green bin to dispose of organic materials and one grey bin to dispose of garbage. Residents are responsible for purchasing blue bags to recycle other materials including cardboard and plastic.

Curbside collection occurs by zones and it happens in your neighbourhood on the same day all year, including holidays. The only exception to this rule is Christmas Day and New Year's Day when collection typically takes place one day earlier. Not sure what zone you're in? Review the curbside collection zoning map.

RFID Tag Frequently Asked Questions

What is RFID and what should I know about it?
Radio-frequency Identification, or RFID, is like the barcodes you'd recognize on most retail purchased items. Each ID number is unique to your waste and organics cart. During curbside collection, the tag will relay the address and time and date of collection to a reader located within the collection truck. This information is stored on a private, secured database and is only accessed by authorized personnel. In the future, all collected data will be analyzed to make improvements to the City of Lloydminster's curbside collection program.
What are the benefits of having an RFID tag on my carts?
RFID systems are common in the solid-waste industry, as more communities are recognizing the significant benefits. By implementing the system, the City of Lloydminster will, over time, identify opportunities to improve existing service and divert more waste from the landfill. Using RFIDs, the City of Lloydminster can also verify collection services – enhancing customer service.
What should I expect during the RFID installation period?
You are not required to do anything other than ensure waste (grey) and organics (green) carts are on the curb on your regularly scheduled collection days between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. from September 7-18, 2020.
How will I know the RFID tags are installed on my carts?
You will notice a barcode tag installed on the back of your cart under the handle. Please do not remove the tag. Once the tags are installed, you may roll your carts back to your property.
What if the RFID tag has fallen off my cart, what should I do?
If the tag falls off your cart, please call the Operations Centre at 780-874-3700.
Is there an additional fee for the installation of RFID tags?
No, there is no additional cost.
 Safety
To keep everyone safe and to mitigate the risks of COVID-19, GFL Environmental Inc. crews will be wearing masks and gloves during the installation process. Crews will also sanitize the carts’ touch points prior to handling and installation. Residents are requested to avoid unnecessary interaction to avoid delay and mitigate the risks of COVID-19.
 Privacy
The City of Lloydminster is committed to protecting your privacy. The RFID system will collect information such as addresses and date and time of collection. This information is collected in accordance with the Local Authority Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (LAFOIP). The RFID system will not collect personal information. If you have any questions about the collection, contact the LAFOIP Head at 780-871-8328.
Where can I find more information?
For more information, call the Operations Centre at 780-874-3700 or email curbside@lloydminster.ca.

Curbside Collection Changes due to COVID-19

To ensure the safety of contractors and employees, additional precautionary measures will be effective immediately:

Waste Cart
  • all contents must be bagged before being placed in the grey cart
  • contents must not overflow
  • lids must be completely closed

Grey Waste Cart

Organics Cart
  • all food waste must be bagged in certified compostable bags. Paper bags not lined with plastic are also accepted.

Organics cart

Recycling
  • no tissue or medical waste is permitted (these items must be placed in the waste cart)
  • recyclables must be placed in a transparent bag

Recycling Bags

Failure to comply will result in a violation. A violation sticker will be placed on your cart or bag, indicating the issue. Residents must correct the error in order for the items to be collected the following week.

What to put in each cart and bag

Organics cart (green bin)

Recycling organic materials in the green cart diverts waste from the landfill and is collected either weekly or twice-monthly throughout the year. The City of Lloydminster is now collecting organics weekly until November, when it will change to twice-monthly pickup.

With the absence of yard waste, the City observes an 80 per cent decrease in curbside organics collection during the winter.

The following items can be recycled in the organics cart:

  • Bones
  • Branches
  • Bread
  • Cat litter
  • Coffee grounds and filters

Recycling (blue or clear bag)

Blue bag recycling collection is an easy, efficient and eco-friendly way to recycle. Using blue bags allows a higher volume of recyclables to be placed out with greater ease so residents can recycle more:

PlasticsMetalsPaper / cardboard
  • Bleach jugs
  • Dish soap bottles
  • Drink bottles
  • Fabric softener bottles
  • Milk bottles
  • Plastic bottles
  • Plastic tubs and jugs
  • Windshield washer jugs

  • Aluminum cans and foil
  • Aluminum containers
  • Tin cans and lids

Natural Christmas Tree Disposal

Between January 11 and 15, 2021, natural, undecorated Christmas Trees will be accepted as part of the Curbside Collection program. Simply place your tree on your curbside prior to 7 a.m. on your collection date for the City to dispose of it.

Between December 28, 2020 to January 22, 2021, natural, undecorated Christmas Trees will be accepted at the Lloydminster Landfill.

All trees collected through these methods will be mulched and donated back to the community.

Cart use guidelines and care

Cart use guidelines

Placement of carts is important! The automated arm on the truck can only operate if it has enough clearance to maneuver. Follow these easy steps to ensure easy collection.

  • Have your cart out by 7 a.m. on your collection day
  • Place your carts so that the wheels are to the curb (facing forward)
  • Do not park in front of carts and blue bags until they have been collected
  • Keep your carts one metre (an arm's length) apart so the truck's robotic arm can grab it
  • Ensure that the lid is fully closed. Overflowing carts not be emptied
  • Maximum weight capacity for grey and green carts is 100lbs. or 45kg.
  • Extra bags outside the cart will not be picked up (except for blue bags). Loose material will not be collected
  • Residents can take excess garbage bags to the Lloydminster Sanitary Landfill free of charge

Curbside distances

How to take care of your cart
  • Store your cart away from direct sunlight.
  • Rinse your organics carts weekly. You can use diluted bleach or a water-vinegar solution to minimize the odour. A small amount of laundry detergent, powdered lime or baking soda layered at the bottom of your cart can also help control odour.
  • Bag items inside the kitchen catcher with a biodegradable bag or brown paper bags.
  • You may choose to use larger paper biodegradable sacks to line your organics cart, but it is not required.
  • Complete the Report a Concern form to request for cart repair or replacement.

Did you know?

Did you know that more than 7,900 single and multi-family homes participate in our Curbside Collection Program, meaning more materials are being diverted from the Lloydminster Sanitary Landfill? Since its inception in April 2013, the program has diverted over 13,400 tonnes from the landfill.
