I often reflect on my grandparents when I hear seniors mentioned in a conversation. Growing up, I was blessed to live close to both sets of my grandparents. Our children were blessed even to get to know my wife’s grandparents—their great grandparents—and they have three of four grandparents still actively a part of their lives. It really is a gift.
I know not everyone today lives near relatives and family, so adopting neighbours is a great way to meet that need. Our grandparents and seniors bring an enormous wealth of knowledge. The changes within our world during their lifetime are truly unimaginable.
For heat, they may have cut and hauled wood or shovelled coal. Indoor bathrooms and running water definitely weren’t always a part of their lives. And almost all seniors, from what I’ve heard, walked uphill, maybe even barefoot both to and from school. I definitely believe the walking part … but the hills?
Our seniors today are still the backbone of our volunteer base. You can find them at the Olive Tree, Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Interval Store and most other charities and non-profits in and around our city. Seniors are the lifeblood of our community, and we’re grateful.
We’re very fortunate to have the Legacy Centre, offering seniors a place to gather, play cards, share a meal and enjoy sports. The services and programs provided by the Legacy Centre staff and volunteers are second to none. If you’re looking to try something new or be reacquainted with old friends, please call the Legacy Centre at 780-875-4584 or check out their Facebook page by searching Legacy Centre.
With the new Lloydminster Museum and Archives opening, many seniors are excited to visit, comment, and reminisce. I always look forward to spending time with our seniors and learning about former businesses, residents and how things “used to” get done.
Thank you to all our seniors for helping to build our community and our country. Your hard work and dedication to your family, friends and community have blessed all of us.
Thank you.
