Lloydminster, AB/SK – As a direct result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic response, the City of Lloydminster has issued layoff notices to 64 casual and part-time staff members.
On March 16, 2020 the City of Lloydminster suspended public access to all recreation and culture facilities to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. With these facilities unable to host guests or bring in revenue to offset operational costs, difficult staffing decisions became necessary.
Most of the impacted staff are based in recreation and culture facilities, however, Administration also made reductions in other service areas where government-mandated distancing and isolation measures are affecting City operations.
“Our thoughts are with our valued co-workers and the families who are impacted by these layoffs,” said Dion Pollard, City Manager. “These people have done great work for this community and we sincerely wish there was a better alternative, but the ongoing situation has left us few options at this time.”
Hours for casual and part-time staff are typically scheduled on a weekly to monthly basis, based on work need. Receipt of formal layoff notices enable staff without scheduled hours the ability to access options such as employment insurance benefits.
“With safety, continuity of service and financial accountability as our guiding priorities, we must constantly assess and adapt our municipality’s pandemic response plan to meet new and emerging challenges relating to COVID-19,” said Pollard.
In addition to the recreation and culture facility closures, the City has also suspended public access to its municipal offices, including City Hall and the Operations Centre.
