COVID-19 Update

This notice was published more than one year ago. Some information may no longer be current.
For up-to-date information, please visit Lloydminster.ca/COVID-19.

Lloydminster, AB/SK – On Wednesday, April 29, 2020, the Government of Saskatchewan announced a COVID-19 cluster was identified at the Lloydminster Hospital.

Key services, including emergency department services, emergency surgical and obstetrical services remain available at the hospital, which serves a region of approximately 75,000.

From Saskatchewan Health:

As of April 29, 2020, Saskatchewan has 17 new, confirmed cases of COVID-19, bringing the provincial total to 383. Eleven of the new cases are from the far north (La Loche), five from the north region (four in Lloydminster) and one from the Saskatoon area. Eighty-six of the cases are considered active. Recoveries remain at 291.

The new COVID-19 cases in Lloydminster have been linked to a cluster based in Lloydminster Hospital. Thirteen cases have been identified, including five health care workers and eight patients, and transmission has occurred in the hospital setting.

During a public address on Wednesday afternoon, Saskatchewan Medical Officer Dr. Mandiangu Nsungu stated that since the outbreak began, there have been 34 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Lloydminster, with 18 recovered and 16 still active.

From the City of Lloydminster:

“We pray for a speedy recovery for those in our community who have tested positive for COVID-19 and once again express our deepest gratitude for our local health care professionals who are on the front lines of this battle every day,” said Mayor Gerald Aalbers. “We have understood from the beginning that Lloydminster is not immune to the scourge of COVID-19. This news should serve as a powerful reminder of the need for continued social distancing and other protective measures in our community.”

Last week, the City announced it would align its COVID-19 response with the phased reopening plan put forth by the Government of Saskatchewan; however, on Wednesday, April 29, 2020, Premier Scott Moe stated, “As a result of these two outbreaks, Phase 1 of the ‘Reopen Saskatchewan’ plan will not begin in La Loche or in the community of Lloydminster on Monday (May 4) as previously planned.”

The City will continue its regular consultation with the Lloydminster Hospital, Government of Saskatchewan and the Saskatchewan Health Authority in determining next steps for Lloydminster.

Residents and business owners within city limits are to continue following the measures set out in the State of Local Emergency, which can be found at lloydminster.ca/COVID-19. While health is a provincial matter, everyone is reminded to continue doing their part in keeping everyone healthy.

COVID-19 prevention and protection measures include:

  • maintaining two metres of separation from other individuals
  • using good hygiene practices, such as frequent handwashing
  • staying at home and away from others if you are feeling ill

Individuals with concerns about symptoms should call Alberta’s Health Link (811) or Saskatchewan’s HealthLine (811) unless severely ill in which case you should call 911 and inform the operator that you suspect COVID-19.
