Underground infrastructure replacement is well underway as crews began the first phase of the Central Business District Replacement Program began on Monday, May 15, 2023. The project's first phase includes the closure of 50 Street between 49 Avenue and 50 Avenue, along with the full closure of the 49 Avenue and 50 Street intersection.
What's Happening Next Week (May 23-27, 2023)
- Underground utility connections and installations at 50 Street and 49 Avenue. Crews will then begin working on the underground infrastructure west of 49 Avenue along 50 Street.
- 49 Avenue intersection aboveground road rehabilitation once underground utility tie-ins are completed.
Tasks Completed the Week of May 15-19, 2023:
- Safety fence installed around the perimeter of Phase 1
- Streetlights were removed along 50 Street between 49 Avenue and 50 Avenue
- Removed existing boulevard trees
- Coniferous and deciduous trees will be planted as part of the downtown area redevelopment
- Asphalt and sidewalk removal
Weather permitting, Phase 1 is from May 15, 2023, to June 4, 2023.
To help ensure the safety of workers, motorists and pedestrians, the City of Lloydminster reminds everyone to allow extra time for travel, obey all signage and follow proper detours. Pedestrians should take extra precautions and maintain a safe distance from construction fencing and equipment.
The project’s second phase begins at the conclusion of Phase 1 and is expected to be completed in early October, weather permitting.
Downtown Parking & Navigation
During construction, 24 temporary parking stalls will be available at Synergy Credit Union at the corner of 49 Avenue and 49 Street. These temporary parking stalls will replace the 20 spots that will be unavailable during construction. Motorists are advised to use the dedicated parking stalls.
Detour and local traffic only signs will be placed throughout the area to show traffic and visitors how to access properties while avoiding the construction site. There will be no parking or pedestrian access permitted in the work zone until the end of the construction period. Emergency access will be maintained to all affected businesses at all times through alternate routes.
Project Scope
The program consists of replacing and upgrading underground municipal infrastructure throughout the downtown core to maintain the serviceability and longevity of the city’s underground systems. Further work includes removing and reconstructing the roadway surface, sidewalks, benches and other public amenities to bring the DARP's vision to life.
During construction, access to properties along 50 Street will be restricted, and portions of existing sidewalks will be left In place to permit access to business front doors. Back alleys will remain open at all times for business owners, employees and customers.
Work will take place between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Sundays.
