Lloydminster, AB/SK – The Lloydminster Fire Department partnered with Holy Rosary High School's Woods 9 class to create cribbing and blocking used in vehicle extrication. The presentation took place at Station No. 1 on Monday, June 5, 2023.
Under the guidance of their shop teacher Kevin Bender, the class of 18 students spent approximately 12 hours crafting these essential blocking pieces. The cribbing and blocking will now be distributed among the fleet of fire trucks at the department, further enhancing their emergency response capabilities.
“We’re extremely proud of our students for their hard work and commitment to this project. Engaging in practical applications of their woodworking skills while contributing to the safety of our community has been a rewarding experience,” says Bender. “We’re grateful for the opportunity to support the Lloydminster Fire Department in their vital work."
Cribbing techniques play a crucial role in extrication operations, ensuring the stability and safety of vehicles involved in accidents or situations where instability or unexpected movement is a concern. The purpose-built wooden pieces, commonly known as cribbing blocks, provide additional support and prevent the shifting or rolling of vehicles. Some of the pieces can also be used to gain a height advantage when using airbags to lift vehicles involved in collisions.
Assistant Fire Chief Bill Heesing expressed gratitude for the support and collaboration from Holy Rosary High School, stating, "The contribution made by the Woods 9 class is invaluable to our department. These cribbing pieces will enhance our ability to ensure the safety of our personnel and the public during rescue operations. We appreciate the dedication and craftsmanship of the students and their teacher."
By supporting the efforts of the Lloydminster Fire Department, Holy Rosary High School aims to contribute to the community's safety and emergency response capabilities. The collaboration between the school and the fire department exemplifies the importance of community partnerships in fostering a safer and more resilient Lloydminster.
