Lloydminster, AB/SK – After an outstanding response from the community in June, Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) Lloydminster welcomes Imagine Institute to facilitate a second training session on unconscious bias on September 21, 2023.
Unconscious biases are a natural and automatic process in which our brains make quick judgments and assessments based on our background, experiences and cultural influences. Despite best intentions, unconscious bias can influence decision-making, hiring practices and workplace interactions, leading to disparities and exclusion.
“The City of Lloydminster and our community partners believe in the importance of cultivating inclusive and equitable workplaces. To achieve this, we recognize the need to address unconscious bias and develop the skills necessary to engage in validating conversations,” says Patrick Lancaster, Manager, Social Programs and Services. “Our goal is to deepen the understanding of unconscious bias among participants and equip them with the tools to promote inclusivity and equity in the workplace.
“This is a great opportunity for businesses and service providers to develop positive and supportive workplaces for their staff and the residents they serve.”
Unconscious Bias – Discovering How Your Bias Shows Up at Work
The full-day session takes place on September 21 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and offers participants a comprehensive exploration of unconscious bias and its manifestations in familiar settings. Through research-based insights and interactive activities, attendees will gain a deeper understanding of how difficult conversations can uncover and challenge preconceptions, ultimately leading to more inclusive workplaces. No prior preparation is required as everyone brings their own biases and experiences to the table.
The learning objectives for the full-day session include:
- Understand unconscious bias and the ways it can show up in the workplace.
- Explore ways bias shows up in the way we interact with colleagues.
- Increase communication skills related to bias with tools to support challenging conversations related to bias.
- Explore methods to help check bias in the way decisions are made.
Lunch is provided for participants attending the full-day session to ensure a comfortable and engaging learning experience.
