As we start a new year, many may start with resolutions to change their lives. Farmers are finalizing decisions about which crops to plant and how much fertilizer to use. Others may still contemplate a winter holiday somewhere warm and with sand between their toes. The rest may be grateful that the days are getting longer and we’re having some reasonable weather.
The City of Lloydminster has many plans for 2023. The highlight for me will be the completion of the new mechanical wastewater treatment facility. The facility will meet and exceed federal environmental standards that are continually changing. Many of you have asked whether the facility can be expanded as Lloydminster grows and needs more capacity. The answer is yes. The facility has been designed for future expansion when the time comes.
The Downtown Area Redevelopment Plan will kick off in 2023. The starting point will be the underground structures, namely the water, sewer and storm pipe replacement. This will commence, followed by street improvements on the surface. These improvements will result in street closures and road detours. I am afraid this work will not happen overnight or in just a few days. I ask for patience and co-operation as we start this process. Local businesses will be affected, and I again ask that you work with the businesses and the city to follow directions, access points, and available parking. Change does come with rewards but also challenges. More information about this project is available at Lloydminster.ca/downtown.
The Lloydminster Place development continues to move forward. City Council and Administration are working on several fronts, from grant funding to a firmer price estimate for the project. Information will be brought forward to the community as it becomes available. Thank you for your continued comments, questions, concerns and ideas regarding the facility and the overall plan. The year will be filled with many events from one end of the city to another. Whether you enjoy the outdoors, sports, or culture or are looking for business opportunities, they’ll abound throughout the upcoming year. Stay tuned for upcoming local events and check out the online community calendar at Lloydminster.ca/calendar.
I look forward to seeing you around the city!
