I have been privileged to serve our community for almost eight years as mayor and find myself constantly looking forward to what lies ahead for the city. This has led to a lot of questions. The main one is, what’s around the curve? What is next for the city?
With so many opportunities and challenges our community is in a constant state of change. Often, we find ourselves checking the weather to determine how we should dress for the day, and what the weather might do to our plans. Our farming friends rely on weather much more directly and as harvest is underway, the implications of rain on whatever season a farmer is currently in may be a positive or an extreme challenge. Here in the city, the weather is also about the political climate in the two provinces we belong to.
The next curve that is scheduled is the provincial election in Saskatchewan. Lloydminster residents who live on the Saskatchewan side will get the opportunity to vote in two elections this fall. The first election will likely be held in late October and Saskatchewan residents will choose the MLA who will represent them for the next 4 years. The City of Lloydminster will also have an election this fall for Mayor and City Councillors this date has been set by the Saskatchewan Government onNovember 13,2024. All rural and urban municipalities in the Province of Saskatchewan will have elections on this date to choose those who will be their representatives. The curve that lies ahead for the newly elected council will be figuring out how to face the challenges that present themselves with the current resources, determining how to respond to challenges provincially and federally, and working hard to maintain and create relationships with our provincial and federal governments. Each council is tasked with weighing the needs and wants required to serve our community and then coming up with a balanced budget.
We never know for sure what is around the curve as our federal and provincial governments are constantly changing the funding formulas and so as a city, we have to be able to respond to these changes and make sure that we are meeting needs and providing the services required for our community.
