Lloydminster, AB/SK – The City of Lloydminster has entered into a funding agreement for two full-time School Resource Officers, one for each school division, starting in September.
The partnership involves the City of Lloydminster, the Lloydminster RCMP Detachment, the Lloydminster Region Health Foundation, the Lloydminster Catholic School Division (LCSD) and Lloydminster Public School Division (LPSD).
The full-time positions will focus on interacting and mentoring students to promote positive choices and reduce RCMP calls to the schools.
“The youth are the foundation and future of our community. With all of the partners involved in this School Resource Position, it shows that we are putting a lot of effort and time into developing our youth for the future of our community,” said Sgt. Sarah Knelsen.
The City currently funds a part-time SRO within the budget, which is currently shared between the school divisions with approximately 10 hours per week.
“The SRO is going to be an essential part of our education system. With 182 calls to the school system last year, we hope the new SROs can build relationships and allow the students to come to them if they are having trouble rather than bringing in officers off the street who are unfamiliar with the children,” said Councillor Stephanie Brown-Munro.
Const. Grant Kirzinger who currently serves as the part-time SRO, has been selected for one of the full-time positions, with a hiring process underway to fill the second role.
