Phase 2 of the Central Business District Replacement Program (downtown construction), which includes the closure of the 50 Street and 50 Avenue intersection, is well underway.
As a reminder, alley access remains open to all businesses in the downtown construction area, including those along 50 Street between 50 Avenue and 49 Avenue.
What's happening next week (June 19-23, 2023), weather permitting:
- Underground utility installations will continue along 50 Street west of 49 avenue
- Final ACP and concrete removals within the intersection of 50 Avenue and 50 Street.
Tasks completed the week of June 12-18, 2023:
- Underground utility installations continue along 50 Street
- Service connections into buildings
- 49 Avenue Road Repair and the 50 Street and 49 Avenue intersection reopened to traffic
- Transition into Phase 2 of the traffic accommodation plan, including the closure of the 50 Avenue and 50 Street intersection
- Streetlight removal within the 50 Avenue and 50 Street intersection
- Tree removal within the 50 Avenue and 50 Street intersection
- Coniferous and deciduous trees will be planted as part of the downtown area redevelopment
- Traffic light removal within the 50 Avenue and 50 Street intersection
- Asphalt and concrete removals within the 50 Avenue and 50 Street intersection
Weather permitting, Phase 2 is from June 10, 2023, to October 31, 2023.
To help ensure the safety of workers, motorists and pedestrians, the City of Lloydminster reminds everyone to allow extra time for travel, obey all signage and follow proper detours. Pedestrians should take extra precautions and maintain a safe distance from construction fencing and equipment.
The project’s second phase begins at the conclusion of Phase 1 and is expected to be completed in early October, weather permitting.
Downtown Parking & Navigation
During construction, 24 temporary parking stalls are available at Synergy Credit Union at the corner of 49 Avenue and 49 Street. These temporary parking stalls will replace the 20 spots that will be unavailable during construction. Motorists are advised to use the dedicated parking stalls.
Detour and local traffic only signs will be placed throughout the area to show traffic and visitors how to access properties while avoiding the construction site. There will be no parking or pedestrian access permitted in the work zone until the end of the construction period. Emergency access will be maintained to all affected businesses at all times through alternate routes.
Project Scope
The program consists of replacing and upgrading underground municipal infrastructure throughout the downtown core to maintain the serviceability and longevity of the city’s underground systems. Further work includes removing and reconstructing the roadway surface, sidewalks, benches and other public amenities to bring the DARP's vision to life.
During construction, access to properties along 50 Street will be restricted, and portions of existing sidewalks will be left In place to permit access to business front doors. Back alleys will remain open at all times for business owners, employees and customers.
Work will take place between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Sundays.
