The first stage of construction for the Highway 16 (44 Street) Rehabilitation Project is on target to start Wednesday, May 19, 2021, and includes constructing the necessary transition zones at both the west and east ends of the project site.
The west transition zone located between 75 Avenue and 80 Avenue will utilize existing gaps in the centre median to permit the flow of traffic from the north side to the south side and vice-versa.
The east transition zone between 59 Avenue and 62 Avenue will require removing the existing median and construction of a temporary transition point. This work is necessary to ensure adequate turning radius and transition lengths for the longer vehicles still anticipated to be permitted through the construction site.
The construction of the transition zones will take the next few days as they will be critical pieces for the remainder of the project. The implementation of the complete traffic accommodation strategy is anticipated to be completed by May 25, 2021, weather permitting. The sooner the transition zones are created and the traffic accommodation strategy is implemented, the sooner construction can begin.
The City of Lloydminster reminds motorists to anticipate the closure of Highway 16 and 62 Avenue intersection and one-way traffic along Highway 16 during the week of May 24, 2021.
