Lloydminster, AB/SK – The Olive Tree and Salvation Army food banks, along with Project Sunrise mental health initiatives, will benefit from the community’s generosity as the Lloydminster RCMP and the Lloydminster Fire Department lace up for the sixth annual Todd Gustavson “Battle of the Badges” Memorial Hockey Game.
The two public figure teams will dress their best players – and likely a few others just to fill a fourth line – during the Family Day long weekend at the Centennial Civic Centre. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for a 7:15 p.m. puck drop on Saturday, February 18, 2023. The event is open to all ages, and admission is by cash donation or non-perishable food item(s).
"The Lloydminster Fire Department may have different badges, different mandates and weaker hockey skills,” jokes Cst. Kelsey Davidge. “But we're all on the same team when it comes to supporting our community. The charity hockey game against the fire department is always a community highlight of the year, and it's an honour to hit the ice with our brave firefighters.”
“Let's show the community what teamwork and generosity looks like. Together we can raise much-needed funds and have some fun."
The hockey game will be the main attraction, but the event will also feature a silent auction, raffles and concessions, with all proceeds going toward the chosen charities. Sparky the Dalmation and the RCMP Safety Bear are also expected to make an appearance.
"It’s always an honour to participate in the Battle of the Badges charity event against the RCMP – even if they play dirty tricks on the ice. However, it's not just about friendly competition and bragging rights, it's about making a difference in our community. The funds we raise will go towards supporting local charities and helping those in need,” says Bill Heesing, Assistant Fire Chief.
“We're not just playing for the win, but for the betterment of our community. Through this, we aim to show the community that we’re more than just first responders – we’re community leaders."
