The Bioclean Aquatic Centre offers Red Cross courses through the Canadian Lifesaving Society and the Canadian Red Cross including the Lifeguard and Assistant Lifeguard courses and Water Instructor course. We also offer Babysitters and Stay Safe courses for youth.

Learn more about these programs by visiting our program guide.

StaySafe Course

Prerequisites:

  • Participant must be age 9 years old and/or completed Grade 3.

This program focuses on giving youth the applicable and age-appropriate skills they require, while simultaneously increasing their capacity to improve safety and respond to challenges accordingly.

 Babysitting Course

Prerequisites:

  • Participant must be age 11 years old and/or completed Grade 5.

Learn about providing care for babies, toddlers, preschoolers and school-aged children and know that they are all at different development stages and have different needs. Develop skills to solve problems that may occur while babysitting by using leadership and decision-making skills. Practice knowledge and skills covered in basic first aid and CPR.

 Assistant Lifeguarding Course

Prerequisites:

  • 13 years of age (by the end of the course)
  • Ability to swim the Red Cross Swim Kids 10 or equivalent or higher

Includes knowledge and practices of first aid, rescue skills, lifeguarding skills, safe behaviours and how to be part of an elite team. This ensures youth are trained in prevention of injuries, not just in how to respond to them. This will allow teens to assist or volunteer at aquatic facilities (as slide attendance, summer camps, assist with swim lessons etc.).

 Lifeguarding Course

Prerequisites:

  • 15 years or older
  • Completed the Red Cross Assistant Lifeguard certification within the last 5 years
  • Standard First Aid & CPR Level C (certification must be current)

Professional Lifeguard certification for pools. The course prepares deck-ready lifeguards to prevent and respond to lifeguard emergencies, create a safe environment, work in teams, and handle public relations in a professional manner. The candidates are continuously evaluated throughout the course based on standard evaluation criteria and complete final skills and knowledge assessments.

Water Safety Instructor Course

Prerequisites:

  • 15 years or older by the last day of the WSI-Classroom & Pool
  • One of:
    • Red Cross Assistant Lifeguard
    • Bronze Cross (certifications do not need to be current)

Perform the water safety skills and strokes to meet the highest level of performance criteria in the Red Cross Swim Kids program.

WSI Course includes:

  • Online (14-22 hours): Focuses on the theory of instruction through videos, virtual games, online activities, workbook exercises and knowledge evaluation at the end of each module. Upon registration you will receive a package which includes the workbook and PIN.
  • Skills Evaluation (2 hours): Ensures candidates have the necessary water safety skills, strokes and instructor emergency response skills equivalent to the Red Cross Swim Kids Level 10 performance criteria. This is a scheduled day prior to the course dates.
  • Teaching Experience (12 hours): This allows candidates to have first-hand experience observing real progressions and swimmer skills with a mix of personalities, and learning styles. This will give the candidate a frame of reference on the link to the theory of the course. This is completed prior to the classroom and pool components and after the online component.
  • Classroom and Pool (21 hours): Candidates are evaluated on their knowledge and ability to apply the theory for effectively planning, teaching, and evaluating swimmers in the Red Cross Swim program. Demonstrating skills, candidates complete a variety of practise-teaching exercises either with their peer candidates or using actual swimmers in an existing program. This is the last step; all other components must be completed before entering this step.

Standard First Aid CPR-C Course

Canadian Red Cross core First Aid & CPR courses offer lifesaving first aid skills. All courses cover cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for adults, children, and babies (according to the level of CPR included). Courses meet legislation requirements for provincial/territorial worker safety and insurance boards. Courses offer skills for individuals needing training for the workplace or for those interested in having first aid skills so they can respond to emergencies at home.
