The City of Lloydminster operates under strict guidelines and procedures to maintain safe and reliable drinking water. As a precautionary measure drinking water advisories are issued when the City of Lloydminster suspects its possible that the presence of harmful microbes, like E.coli bacteria or other parasites are in the drinking water supply. Consuming water that carries these microbes can make you and your pet’s sick; however, boiling the water kills these microbes making the water safe for consumption.

Drinking Water Advisories may be issued for the following reasons:

  • Water Leaks or main breaks where contamination is possible.
  • Depressurization of water mains
  • Contaminants enter the water distribution system from the Water Treatment Plant.
For urgent after hours water inquiries please call 780-872-5418.

Frequently Asked Water Advisory Questions

How will I know if I am supposed to boil my water?

City of Lloydminster employees will hand deliver yellow Drinking Water Advisories door-to-door to affected homes and businesses. In some cases, a representative from Saskatchewan Health services may contact you, particularly if you own a business. Should the affected area be too large that door-to-door knocking is not feasible, electronic sign boards will be put in the affected areas alerting residents.

We may also communicate using one or more media and social media platforms. This will include the City of Lloydminster's website, Facebook, twitter and sometimes radio stations.

What do I do if I am given a Drinking Water Advisory?

Water should be brought to a rolling boil for at least one minute. Boiled water, or bottled water should be used for the following:

  • Drinking or preparing beverages (including coffee)
  • Making formula and baby food and for washing baby bottles
  • For washing and preparing food to be eaten raw (fruit, vegetables, etc.)
  • For making ice cubes
  • For brushing your teeth or rinsing your mouth.

I drank/cooked with the water before I knew about the Drinking Water Advisory, what should I do?

The City of Lloydminster is confident in our water quality and in most cases a Drinking Water Advisory is issued as a precautionary measure. We make every effort to inform you as soon as possible.

If you have health related questions you may contact publichealthinspection@pnrha.ca or 1-888-298-0202

Can I take a shower or bath?

Yes, Adults and older children and teens may take showers or baths during a Drinking Water Advisory. Due to the higher risk of younger children drinking bath water, they should be given a sponge bath instead of bathing them in a tub.

Is there anything I can do?

Residents can help flush the system by running water in their bathtub for one to two minutes after water services have been restored (in the event of a water leak, main break or depressurization) and/or when a Water Advisory has been issued. This will expel any discolouration in the water that’s in your water service.

How long will a Drinking Water Advisory be in place?

The Drinking Water Advisory will be in place until water tests confirm that there is no contamination. All tests are sent to a provincial lab in Saskatoon or Regina. It takes approximately 3 business days to get the results back.

How will I know when the Drinking Water Advisory is over?

The City of Lloydminster will hand deliver green Drinking Water Advisory Lifted notices to affected homes and businesses. Should the affected area be too large that door-to-door knocking is not feasible, electronic sign boards will be put in the affected areas alerting residents.

We may also communicate using one or more media and social media platforms. This will include the City of Lloydminster's website, Facebook, twitter and sometimes radio stations.
