Alberta, Saskatchewan Family Day free family fishing

Alberta and Saskatchewan residents can fish for free throughout the Family Day weekend, February 17-19, 2024.

Alberta

Fishing is a fun way for friends and family to make memories while connecting with some of Alberta’s greatest natural resources - our lakes, rivers, streams and the fish that live in them.

During Family Fishing Weekends, Albertans and visitors are encouraged to give fishing a try on waterbodies with open fishing seasons without having to purchase a sportfishing licence. If you are using a Special Harvest Licence (Walleye tag), the purchase of a sportfishing licence is still required

Alberta hosts two Family Fishing Weekends each year:

  • February – over the Family Day long weekend
  • July – during the weekend following Canada Day

National Fishing Week occurs each year during the second week of July.

This notice is distributed by the City of Lloydminster on behalf of the Government of Alberta.

Saskatchewan

Calling all anglers! Free Fishing Weekend is coming up on the Family Day weekend in Saskatchewan. From February 17-19, 2024, residents and visitors can angle on Saskatchewan's public waters without a licence.

With warmer temperatures across the province, it's critical to keep safety top of mind. Check out the Winter Ice Safety Fact Sheet for more tips on planning ahead and ice thickness guidelines.

This notice is distributed by the City of Lloydminster on behalf of the Government of Saskatchewan.

Reminders

Keep in mind fishing regulations still apply. Each province's respective sportfishing regulations apply all year to anglers of all ages and residences, including during the Family Fishing Weekends.

Clean, drain and dry all of your equipment to reduce the risk of spreading aquatic invasive species, even in cold, winter waters.

Free fishing is not available in national parks.
