At 11 a.m. on November 11, 1918, the guns of the First World War went silent, marking the end of a conflict that shaped Canada’s role on the world stage. Known at the time as “the war to end all wars,” the First World War saw Canadians fight as one nation, with our own generals leading Canadian troops. The victory at Vimy Ridge left a lasting impact on our country, rooted in the courage, strength, and commitment shown by Canadian soldiers.
As we enter the fall season and approach municipal elections, several important topics are coming up in community discussions. Here are some answers to common questions.
What do fire safety and rail safety have in common? Not much, except that this is a great time of year to remind ourselves to think about safety.
The City of Lloydminster is often referred to as ‘our town.’ But what does the term ‘urban’ really mean? Urban is a designation that applies to villages, towns, and cities. As an urban municipality, we work closely with our rural neighbours, including farmers, ranchers, and those living on acreages, as well as businesses located in rural areas.
In conversations with residents and businesses, the City of Lloydminster’s role as a host for a variety of events frequently comes up. The events we organize range from sporting competitions to the development of new commercial and industrial facilities. Each day, both residents and visitors play a role in supporting our local economy.
The need to work together in good times and bad is so critical to every one of us.
As neighbours, we often come together to take care of each other; sometimes, it’s to celebrate something positive, and other times, we gather to grieve and be there for support.
We are truly blessed by the resources around us. With strong ties to agriculture, grains and oil seed production or farmers who raise animals, we are blessed with very productive land. The land provides farmers and ranchers with the ability to produce the food we eat and helps to feed the world we live in.
As I write this article, it’s hard to believe that June 21, the longest day of the year, has passed, and we’re now into summer. We’ve been blessed with lots of rain. It doesn’t always fall when we want it, but the green grass and crops definitely appreciate it.
As we’re now halfway through the month of June, I have to ask, “Where is time going?” The sun is out, and everything is greening up by the minute with the recent rains, which were timely for crops, pasture, hay land and, of course, our yards and gardens. I hate for you to think about the fall, and this fall, in particular, will take Saskatchewan residents to the ballot box for two elections. It doesn’t look like we will have a federal election until sometime after late February 2025.
