A Moment with the Mayor: Construction Season

2026’s construction season got underway and then took a short break for Mother Nature and the snowfall, which reminded us of who is in charge! Work is now moving ahead across Lloydminster, with a number of projects underway and more planned in the coming weeks.

Residents will begin seeing construction activity in several areas of the community, including roadway repairs, underground utility upgrades, and infrastructure improvements designed to support reliable services and long-term growth. This work helps maintain and replace aging infrastructure before larger issues arise and ensures our systems continue to meet the needs of our growing community.

One of the larger projects beginning this construction season is the next phase of the Central Business District Replacement Program in the downtown core. Phase 1B includes reconstruction along 50 Street between 50 Avenue and 51 Avenue, along with improvements to the intersection at 50 Street and 51 Avenue. While residents may notice road work, temporary access changes, and construction activity in the area, the project focuses on much more than what is visible at the surface.

Underground work includes replacing aging water, sanitary and storm sewer infrastructure that has reached the end of its service life. Once complete, improvements will help reduce the risk of future disruptions while supporting reliable services for residents, businesses, and future development. The project also includes new sidewalks, curbs and streetscape features that will improve accessibility and create a more welcoming downtown environment. Work is also underway at various locations throughout the city involving roadway repairs and surface improvements. Some projects involve replacing damaged sections of asphalt, while others require more extensive reconstruction beneath the surface to improve long-term roadway stability. As you can appreciate, these projects take time and may require lane reductions, temporary traffic changes, or adjusted access routes.

Safety remains a priority for everyone. Employees and contractors play a key role in ensuring work is completed safely, and I encourage residents to support these efforts by following posted signage and slowing down in construction zones. The operators working on these projects are members of our community who are focused on completing this work safely and efficiently.

Thank you for your continued patience and support as we work to maintain and improve the infrastructure that residents rely on every day.
