A Moment with the Mayor: Welcome Back!
Welcome back! There’s a different feeling in the air as the weather begins to change, and I am back with my weekly articles from my role as mayor of our great city.
September is a very busy month, and I am already receiving plenty of invitations to community events. The month started with a late Labour Day and some moisture, which can be both good and bad news. Moisture is usually welcome unless you are trying to finish haying or harvesting. A little rain is great for pastures and can help cure canola in the swath, so the changing weather can certainly be a mixed blessing.
Moving to the calendar, Onion Lake Cree Nation is hosting the 150th Treaty 6 Gathering at Fort Pitt this week, with a number of events taking place each day.
The Border Town HOG Chapter is kicking off its annual Toy Run Ride on Saturday, September 12, with a pancake breakfast at Denham Chrysler at 9 a.m. Wheels are up at 11:30 a.m. as riders head out for a great day of riding. The evening will wrap up with supper, a dance, and live and silent auctions at the WLS Convention Centre. Tickets are available through the Border Town HOG Chapter.
Fall Fest is also planned for Saturday, September 12, at Bud Miller All Seasons Park from noon to 5 p.m. for the entire family. Fall Fest features a corn roast, hotdog barbecue, horse-drawn wagon rides, face painting, bouncy castles, crafts, and live music. It is a free event, and everyone is invited to enjoy a beautiful afternoon in the park.
On Sunday, September 13, Bud Miller All Seasons Park will host the Run for Lloydminster, organized by Mercy for Humanity and the Lloyd Imade community, supporting Bea Fisher and Inclusion Lloydminster. The run kicks off at 11 a.m.
Later that afternoon, the Walk of Remembrance will be held at 3 p.m., starting at the picnic shelter. Please come and gather to remember those we have lost and bring attention to World Suicide Prevention Day.
On Monday, September 14, the Border City Rotary Club is hosting its Pancakes for Supper fundraiser in support of the Terry Fox Run. Spiro’s Restaurant will be serving pancakes from 4:30 to 7 p.m. for this unique supper fundraiser.
The biennial Lloydminster Heavy Oil Show kicks off on Tuesday, September 15, with its banquet and opening ceremonies. The show opens to the public at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, September 16, at the Lloydminster Exhibition. Show details are available at lhos.ca.
On Thursday, September 17, the Spark Foundation is hosting “The Chef’s Got Your Back” at Rolling Green Fairways. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with the fundraiser supporting the Lloydminster Community Youth Centre. Contact the Spark Foundation for tickets and additional details.
The annual Fall Cleanup Garage Sale is scheduled for Saturday, September 19, at the Servus Sports Centre, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Tables can be booked at the Servus Sports Centre or online at Lloydminster.ca/GarageSale.
Also on September 19, the Parkinson Association of Alberta is gathering at Bud Miller All Seasons Park for the 14th annual Step ‘n Stride. Things kick off at 1:30 p.m. This event helps raise awareness and support for those living with Parkinson’s disease.
These are just a few of the many events happening in and around our community this month. And with one more weekend still left in September, I’m sure there will be even more opportunities to get out, connect with neighbours, and enjoy everything our community has to offer.
