Council supports development of Transportation Access Program
Lloydminster, AB/SK – Lloydminster City Council has directed Administration to develop a proposed Transportation Access Program (TAP) for Council’s future consideration.
The direction follows ongoing work to assess transportation needs in Lloydminster and explore options to improve access to reliable and affordable transportation. While a traditional municipally operated public transportation system would require significant municipal investment and ongoing taxpayer funding, community feedback indicated stronger support for flexible, targeted, and scalable transportation solutions.
“A reliable transportation system is an important part of a strong, accessible community, but we also have a responsibility to balance those needs with what is affordable and sustainable for taxpayers,” said Mayor Gerald Aalbers. “A targeted, made-for-Lloydminster, approach allows us to start where the need is greatest, learn from the experience and build on it over time if demand and resources support doing so.”
Council approved the concept of TAP in principle, allowing Administration to proceed with developing the program’s details. The program has not been approved for implementation. A completed proposal, including details on how the program could operate, who it would serve, and its financial implications, will return to a future Regular Council Meeting for Council to consider and make a decision.
The proposed TAP is being explored as a first step in a phased approach to addressing transportation needs in Lloydminster. Rather than introducing a traditional fixed-route public transit system, the proposed program would focus initially on residents facing the most significant transportation barriers.
This approach would allow the City to address more immediate transportation needs while continuing to assess community demand and the potential for transportation services to evolve over time.
