A Moment with the Mayor: 2026 Census
Every five years, Statistics Canada conducts the national census from coast to coast to coast. The Government of Canada surveys individuals and private businesses such as farmers and fishers to gather information on population, average age, ethnicity, income levels, acres planted, livestock numbers and many other details.
While some questions may not seem relevant to everyone, the information is invaluable. The data is used by individuals, businesses, non-profits, researchers and all levels of government across the country.
You may wonder what information the City of Lloydminster looks for in the census and how it is used. Like every other municipality in Canada, Lloydminster receives operating and capital grants from provincial and federal governments based on population counts. When people do not complete the census, we risk leaving grant funding, which is essentially our tax dollars, on the table. Completing the census ensures the City receives the funding it qualifies for. While there is a possible fine for refusing to fill out the census, the greater impact is the loss of funding tied to accurate population numbers.
Census data also helps us plan for the future. It shows the age of our population, informs decisions around services, and provides developers and investors with reliable information when considering local projects. Some may ask why the City does not conduct its own census if the information is so important. The answer comes down to cost. A municipal census can cost between $40,000 and $50,000, which makes it difficult to justify unless population growth has been significant enough to ensure additional funding would outweigh the expense.
As you may know, I often have different views than the federal government on a variety of issues. However, one area where we agree is on the importance of completing the census. Statistics Canada will begin preparations for the 2026 census soon, and there will be local job opportunities as part of this effort. I encourage you to keep an eye out for postings.
When your census form arrives in early 2026, please take the time to complete it. Be counted. Your participation ensures Lloydminster receives the funding and planning tools it needs to build a strong future.
