A Moment with the Mayor: Household Recycling Roundup

As we embrace the arrival of spring, many of us are finding items and materials that need to be disposed of. However, some of these items should not end up in the landfill, now or in the future.

The City of Lloydminster, in partnership with the RM of Britannia #502, RM of Wilton #472, and the Town of Lashburn, invites residents to take part in the annual Household Recycling Roundup. Organized by the Lloydminster Household Recycling Roundup Committee, this event offers residents a free and environmentally safe way to dispose of household hazardous materials.

The event brings together local groups and organizations to help residents properly dispose of materials that are either hazardous to the environment or can be recycled.

Accepted Items Include:
•    Aerosol cans
•    Antifreeze
•    Batteries (wet and dry; must be taped)
•    Cellphones
•    Cleaning products and solvents
•    Drugs and pills
•    Fertilizers
•    Laptops and notebooks
•    Medications
•    Metal
•    Monitors and printers
•    Paint and paint containers
•    Pesticides and weed killers
•    Propane tanks
•    Sharps (in a puncture-proof container)
•    Tires (not permitted for pickup)
•    Toxic products
•    TVs
•    Used oils and oil filters
•    Various household electronics

Items must be in household quantities, and leaky or damaged containers should be bagged. Instructions for taping battery terminals will be available online at Lloydminster.ca/CommunityCleanup.

For residents who are unable to attend in person, free curbside pickup is available. To schedule a pickup, call 306-821-7257 before 6 p.m. on May 2. Please ensure items are properly contained and ready for collection.

Once you've dropped off your materials, be sure to visit the family area and enjoy a charitable barbecue, with proceeds supporting the Lloydminster and Area Brain Injury Society (LABIS).

What Happens to the Waste? Volunteers and our service partners will sort the materials brought in for disposal. The items will be sent for proper recycling, where applicable, or to an approved government waste site for proper disposal.

Is There a Cost? No, there is no cost to drop off your items at the Household Recycling Roundup. The City applies for funding to help cover event costs. We believe the short-term cost of hosting the event is far outweighed by the long-term benefit of diverting waste from the landfill.

Mark your calendar for May 3, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the south end of the Lloydminster Exhibition Grounds. Watch for signs and volunteers who will direct you to the appropriate line.

Thank you for helping us keep hazardous waste out of the landfill!

Mayor Gerald S. Aalbers
