A Moment with the Mayor: Protective Services

The protective services team at the City of Lloydminster includes several departments under one umbrella: the RCMP detachment, Lloydminster Fire Rescue, Public Safety, and Municipal Enforcement.

The RCMP detachment is a contracted service between the Government of Canada and the City of Lloydminster. The detachment enforces the Criminal Code of Canada and the respective provincial laws and statutes of Alberta and Saskatchewan within the city limits. Neighbouring municipalities’ policing needs are covered under the Alberta or Saskatchewan provincial policing contracts administered by each province. City RCMP work closely with surrounding rural detachments, particularly during accidents or emergencies that require additional support.

Lloydminster Fire Rescue operates out of Fire Hall 1 and Fire Hall 2, both staffed 24 hours a day. The department provides fire suppression and rescue services within city limits. Through a mutual aid agreement, neighbouring departments are available to assist when extra personnel or apparatus are required during a fire or emergency.

Emergency Management is responsible for planning and overseeing events that require a coordinated response and follow-up. The city has several trained staff who take on additional responsibilities during an emergency or crisis. Lloydminster also works with neighbouring municipalities to plan, share expertise and ensure resources are available when needed.

The Municipal Enforcement department is responsible for enforcing municipal bylaws and ensuring community safety. The team includes both Community Peace Officers and Bylaw Officers, who work together to maintain order and address local concerns. Their duties include bylaw enforcement related to property standards, traffic safety, domestic animal control, trespassing and other public safety matters. Community Peace Officers are authorized under Alberta’s Peace Officer Act, allowing them to assist in traffic enforcement and enforce certain provincial statutes. Together, the team collaborates with the RCMP to uphold municipal and provincial regulations and ensure Lloydminster remains a safe and welcoming community.

The City’s protective services team works diligently to keep our community safe and protected each day. I would like to extend a sincere thank you to all those who serve our community day in and day out.
