A Moment with the Mayor: Reflecting on 2025

As I sit down to close out 2025, I can’t help but reflect on all that has happened in our community this past year. It seems time moves faster with every lap around the sun.

Was Lloydminster busier in 2025 than in years past? I believe so. This year brought exciting milestones, including new businesses opening their doors, the official grand opening of Cenovus Energy Hub, and our first-ever joint Saskatchewan and Alberta government caucus meeting. From business to recreation, Lloydminster experienced another full and vibrant year.

We also saw a federal election and enjoyed all four seasons of weather, sometimes all in the same day.

Our city experienced growth on many fronts, including an increase in new home construction for both single- and multi-family dwellings. Major work began in the southwest corner on a new commercial and residential development, and a number of streets, water, and sewer repair and replacement projects were completed.

Lloydminster’s role as a regional centre continues to strengthen and expand. Our community proudly carried on its tradition of hosting major sporting events at the provincial and national levels. Some highlights from 2025 included:

  • Astec Safety Challenge Curling Championships
  • 2025 Esso Cup
  • Saskatchewan Junior Golf Championships
  • Saskatchewan PGA Golf Tournament
  • Lloydminster Motocross Alberta and Saskatchewan Shootout
  • ACAC Men’s Volleyball Championships
  • ACAC Futsal Championship

Beyond these events, residents showed their generosity through a variety of fundraising initiatives held throughout the year. It was another reminder of how our community continues to come together when it matters most.

Our community also stepped up to help those in need, welcoming evacuees from northern Saskatchewan. Residents and organizations came together to offer support, resources and compassion during a challenging time.

I’ve truly appreciated the many conversations I’ve had with residents and business owners over the past year. On behalf of my family and City Council, I want to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I look forward to everything 2026 will bring for our community, our businesses, and our residents.

Mayor Gerald S. Aalbers
