A Moment with the Mayor: What’s on Your Calendar in 2026

As we begin 2026, my calendar is already filling up with great community events, and I thought it would be a good time to share some of what is coming up this year.

Snow may not be everyone’s favourite topic, but if you like to ski or snowboard, Mount Joy Snow Resort is the perfect spot to enjoy a great local facility just 20 minutes southwest of the city. If you prefer the great outdoors in another way, the Lloyd and District Fish and Game Association (LGFA) is hosting the annual Gun and Outdoor Sportsman Show on January 17 and 18 at the WLS Convention Centre at the Lloydminster Exhibition. The LGFA will also host the annual Family Wildlife and Awards Banquet on January 31 at the same location.

If you are a sports fan, there are plenty of activities happening in Lloydminster and the surrounding area, so be sure to check them out.

February brings Winterfest on February 16. Visit Lloydminster.ca/Winterfest for more information. It is always a great free day of activities and adventures for the young and the young at heart. Bring the whole family for indoor and outdoor fun, depending on what Mother Nature has in store.

Another great event is the Cutter Rally for Cancer on February 28, hosted at the Lloyd Exhibition grounds. You can also challenge your colleagues, neighbours and friends to join the Coldest Night of the Year fundraiser, which is also set for February 28.

In March, as we all hope for a break from winter, Lloydminster will be buzzing with events to help us get into the spring spirit. The Gold Horse Casino is sponsoring the first-ever indoor powwow from March 13 to 15 at Cenovus Energy Hub. This will be a chance to see world-class dancers from across North America compete right here in Lloydminster.

The Lloydminster Oilmen’s Annual Curling Bonspiel returns to the Lloydminster Golf and Curling Centre from March 12 to 15. The event promises great fellowship, serious competition and plenty of bragging rights on the line.

Another can’t-miss event is the Annual Spring Leisure and Sports Show from March 20 to 22 at the Lloyd Exhibition buildings. Picture yourself around a campfire with a new RV, casting a line in search of the big one, or simply dreaming about the warmer months ahead. You can expect a wide variety of vendors and merchandise on display and available for purchase.

I can’t wait to get out and take in some of the great activities happening throughout the city and surrounding area. There are always exciting things happening in Lloydminster, so check out the newspaper, social media, and local radio to stay up to date.

See you out and about!

Mayor Gerald S. Aalbers
