A Moment with the Mayor: Why Lloydminster?
One of the first questions I often ask people I meet is: why did you choose Lloydminster?
The answers vary. Some trace their roots back to 1903, when the Barr Colonists journeyed from England to this land of opportunity. Others arrived for a three-month practicum early in their careers and decided to stay and make Lloydminster home. Many moved here for jobs in health care, retail, or the region’s many industries. More recently, I’ve heard from people who chose Lloydminster as a place to semi-retire, centrally located between where their children now live.
I was fortunate to be among those invited to move here through a corporate opportunity. After just 10 months, I was asked to relocate again. After a long family discussion, we decided not to move. I began searching for a new job, and so our life in Lloydminster began. We found joy in the city’s amenities and, most of all, in its people.
Many others come to Lloydminster full of hope and energy, often with a strong entrepreneurial spirit. They work hard, build relationships, and pour long hours into building not only businesses, but also homes, families and a thriving community. This community is one we can be proud of.
Our community offers many amenities. You can walk, bike, or drive around and enjoy everything from Bud Miller All Seasons Park to retail, commercial spaces, restaurants, and nearly everything else you might need. We are surrounded by fields of grain, oilseeds, and cattle that help feed the world.
Lloydminster is also home to a variety of cultural and recreational facilities that give both youth and seniors the chance to stay active and cheer for their favourite teams.
Another thing that sets Lloydminster apart is its small-town feel. People here truly care and share, always looking for ways to support others in the community and beyond. Whether it is fundraising at galas, buying 50/50 raffle tickets, donating or volunteering, the generosity here is unmatched. Residents consistently go above and beyond to support the causes that matter most to them.
I have seen time and time again how this city steps up when it counts, whether in times of crisis or moments of celebration.
Lloydminster is a true community. People from all over the world have come here looking for a place to call home.
Thank you for being a part of our incredible city and the surrounding area we proudly call home.
