Battle of the Badges hits the ice in support of local organizations

Lloydminster, AB/SK – The Todd Gustavson ‘Battle of the Badges’ memorial hockey game, held Saturday, March 7, brought first responders and the community together for an afternoon of friendly competition while supporting local organizations.

The event raised $8,000 in support of Inclusion Lloydminster and Border City Connects. Attendees also donated approximately 408 kilograms (900 pounds) of food for The Olive Tree and The Salvation Army. These donations will help support programs and services for residents in the community.

This year’s matchup between Lloydminster Fire Rescue and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police made history as the first game to go into overtime. The RCMP secured a 4-3 win with 21 seconds remaining in three-on-three overtime, earning bragging rights until next year’s event.

“It was great to see such a close game, especially with the first overtime finish in the history of Battle of the Badges,” said Mayor Gerald Aalbers. “Just as important is the level of community support behind the event. Residents continue to show up in a big way to support organizations doing important work in Lloydminster. That support is what makes this event possible year after year.”

The annual game honours the legacy of former Lloydminster Fire Chief Todd Gustavson, who served the department for 37 years as a firefighter, deputy chief, and fire chief. The event continues to bring together first responders and residents in support of organizations making a difference in the community.

The City of Lloydminster extends a thank you to everyone who attended, donated, and supported this year’s event.
