City of Lloydminster receives funding from Governments of Alberta and Saskatchewan to support mobile warming shelter

Lloydminster, AB/SK – The City of Lloydminster has received one-time grants of $25,000 each from the Governments of Alberta and Saskatchewan to support the City’s mobile warming shelter. These funds will assist in delivering safe, warm, and accessible supports to residents experiencing homelessness during the winter months.

“These grants reflect the positive conversations we’ve had with both provinces about the needs in our community,” said Mayor Gerald Aalbers. “We appreciate the support of the Governments of Alberta and Saskatchewan as we work together to ensure our mobile warming shelter remains a safe and accessible resource for those who rely on it. We’ll continue working closely with all levels of government and community partners to ensure residents have access to essential supports.”

“Alberta’s government is proud to support Lloydminster’s mobile warming shelter. This funding will help ensure vulnerable residents have a safe, warm place to go during extreme cold,” said Alberta Minister of Assisted Living and Social Services Jason Nixon. “We appreciate the City’s leadership and our continued partnership with Saskatchewan in meeting local needs.”

“Supporting Lloydminster’s mobile warming shelter is one way the Government of Saskatchewan is aiding the delivery of community-led priorities to assist individuals experiencing homelessness,” said Saskatchewan Social Services Minister Terry Jenson. “This investment reflects our commitment to work with municipalities and partners to provide a warm, safe space for those in immediate need during extreme weather.”

The mobile warming shelter activated 28 times last winter, offering support to an average of 27 residents each activation. The mobile warming shelter will activate at -30°C with windchill and run from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m., ensuring longer overnight coverage during dangerous cold events. The City will continue working with Lloydminster & Vermilion for Equity to provide essential supports for those who need a safe place during extreme weather.
