Kings Energy Group Outdoor Rink opens with community shinny game at Cenovus Energy Hub

Lloydminster, AB/SK – The Kings Energy Group Outdoor Rink at Cenovus Energy Hub officially came alive on Saturday as local youth laced up their skates for a friendly game of shinny for the first time.

Players from the U13AAA Lancers and other local hockey teams hit the ice for a classic “sticks in the middle” matchup, celebrating a new milestone in outdoor recreation for the Lloydminster community and marking the first of many skates to come. The opening was about neighbours coming together, with Kings Energy Group proud to play a role in supporting “ice time for all.” The rink provides a space for recreation that brings people together and encourages outdoor activity throughout the winter.

“The Kings Energy Group Outdoor Rink is a great example of how sport connects our community,” said Mayor Gerald Aalbers. “Whether it’s a quick game after school or an evening on the ice with friends and family, this gives everyone a place to stay active and enjoy the season. We’re thankful to Kings Energy Group for their commitment to Lloydminster and for helping create a space that encourages both connection and play.”

“The rink represents something special to all of us at Kings Energy Group,” said Kings Energy Group President Darren King. “Outdoor hockey is a sport we all grew up with; crisp winter air and the simple joy of gathering on the ice. For generations, places like this have been where kids learned to skate, neighbours met, and winter memories were made that lasted far beyond the season. We’re grateful that we can support the local community by offering a space for families to connect, kids to play, and memories to be made.”

The outdoor rink and shinny games celebrate community, teamwork, and time spent outdoors. Through this initiative, Kings Energy Group is helping create more opportunities for residents to stay active and connect with one another, contributing to a welcoming and vibrant Lloydminster for all.

The space will remain open for the season, weather permitting, with lighting for evening use. Details on open hours are available at Lloydminster.ca/Arenas.
