City outlines snow and ice control procedures ahead of winter
Lloydminster, AB/SK – As winter approaches, the City of Lloydminster is reminding residents of regular winter maintenance operations and seasonal parking restrictions that help ensure road safety and efficient snow management.
The City’s Transportation Services team monitors weather conditions each day to ensure crews are prepared for significant snowfall. When heavy snow is expected, additional staff are placed on standby to support weekend, and after-hours operations. Snow is cleared in priority order, with plowing completed before any snow removal begins.
The Winter Maintenance Policy outlines the priority levels for snow-clearing operations:
- Priority 1: Major travel routes with the highest traffic volumes and speed limits.
- Priority 2: Collector roadways that connect two major roadways.
- Priority 3: Downtown and select local roads.
- Priority 4: Residential snow removal.
Priority routes are designed so residents never have to travel far to reach a plowed roadway. On average, crews take about two days to complete Priority 1 areas and three to four additional days for Priority 2 areas. Blowing snow, poor visibility, and continued snowfall can extend timelines as roads may require repeated maintenance. Priority 3 and 4 roads are completed on an as needed basis based on snow accumulation.
The City reminds residents that pushing snow from private property onto public roads or trails creates unsafe, uneven surfaces and interferes with snow maintenance operations. This activity is prohibited under Section 9.2 of the Community Standards Bylaw.
The City thanks residents and visitors for their patience and co-operation as crews work to keep streets safe and accessible throughout the winter season.
Rotating Parking Restrictions (October 31 – March 31)
Seasonal parking restrictions are in effect only when snow clearing or removal is underway in a specific curbside collection zone. When in effect, the following restrictions apply Monday to Friday, excluding holidays:
- Priority 1 Routes: 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Priority 2 Routes: 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and during residential snow removal (with 48 hours notice).
- Priority 3 Routes: No overnight parking.
