Bordering on Disaster (BOD) Conference

The City of Lloydminster, along with planning partners Cenovus Energy, ATCO and Lakeland College, are currently planning the 2025 Bordering on Disaster (BOD) Conference. This conference aims to promote and strengthen the delivery of Emergency Management throughout Alberta, Saskatchewan, Western Canada and the territories.

With successful partnerships across North America, the BOD Conference champions change within Western Canada’s Emergency Management by creating networking opportunities, hosting speakers to discuss lessons learned and industry best practices and attempting to foster the bridge between academic knowledge and practitioner application. The conference views and caters Emergency Management learnings over a multitude of disciplines, including, but not limited to; municipal, industrial, environmental, fire departments, civil security and emergency social services. Further, this conference creates an excellent opportunity to strengthen relationships between the commercial, industrial and municipal sectors with a tradeshow.

Bordering on Disaster is a 2-day conference that will showcase speakers covering a wide range of emergency management stories, learnings and practices. With previous audiences requesting to hear stories from disaster survivors and industrial perspectives, our planning committee has found new and unique speakers to showcase to audiences of the conference. Further, to create a way for connection and engagement, audience members can schedule one-on-one opportunities with attending speakers for a chance to ask specific questions and engage in a personal way with industry experts!

Beyond the Flames: Lessons Learned from the 2023 Wildfires

The 2023 wildfires stand as a poignant reminder of the challenges posed by escalating wildfire risks. This presentation will delve into the multifaceted lessons extracted from the 2023 wildfire crisis. Showcasing insights from multiple jurisdictions, we will integrate perspectives and knowledge from Provincial and Federal Incident Management Teams (IMT), Municipal Administrators and First Responders who played pivotal roles. The presentation will delve into the influence of politics on decision-making and examine how communities are actively collaborating to enhance preparedness for future disasters.

This presentation aims to distill leadership lessons and insights from the 2023 wildfires. By understanding and embracing these insights, we can collectively enhance our preparedness and response mechanisms to safeguard communities in the face of future wildfire challenges.

Beyond the Crisis: Learning from What Didn't Happen

Keynote: October 8

Can emergency management practitioners learn from the disasters that never happened? What about the crises that were successfully prevented; like an evacuation that protected a vulnerable population or a berm that kept floodwaters at bay?

Disasters that are avoided still hold valuable lessons. These "potential non-disasters" can teach practitioners the proactive steps that reduce vulnerability and risk, offering insights that can shape future preparedness and teachings.

This presentation will:

Highlight vulnerability-reducing actions through real-world case studies
Show how these actions can effectively prevent disasters
Demonstrate how to integrate potential non-disasters into after-action reports and lessons-learned sessions
Encourage the replication of proven, preventative measures

Many potential non-disasters go unnoticed each year. This session will not only spotlight these hidden successes but also call on new and relevant Canadian case studies to strengthen our collective understanding of risk reduction.
